Artist’s Statement
As a Landscape painter I spend a lot of time outside, looking at nature, up close, or far away. I become fascinated with a particular place and then focus on how to describe what I see with quick sketches with notes, photos and written descriptions
Each site has its own colors, shapes, marks and energy that express what lives and grows there. In my paintings I combine a variety of tools and materials, such as collage, photographs, block printing, silhouettes, rollers, words, sponges, whatever works. This is my ongoing exploration of paint and painting, anchored in the natural world.
I grew up on Aquidneck Island. As the rapid development of recent years increases I recently committed to documenting, describing and honoring the farms, fields, parks and open space conserved by the Aquidneck Land Trust. I call these my “Landscape Portraits.”
My intention is to inspire connections to this Island and hope for its future.
